Job Description

Reporting to the Director - Engineering, the incumbent will play a key role in product and process design. This work involves working with Redlen’s customers using Solidworks and/or AutoCAD to design/ develop jigs, fixtures and semi and fully-automated equipment for Redlen’s semiconductor growth and device fabrication processes.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in mechanical design and process automation and be comfortable, if required, spending time on the production floor learning current processes and troubleshooting production tooling.  Key responsibilities include:

  • Convert internal and external customer ideas into well documented designs
  • Develop jigs, fixtures and tooling to improve safety, improve quality, and reduce cost
  • Develop automated and semi-automated devices for improved quality and throughput
  • Design for manufacturing, quality and cost
  • Use shop tools to fabricate components of the design and assemble same, as required
  • Create parts lists and bills of material
  • Work with Production Technicians, Process Engineers, and R&D Scientists to understand process requirements and develop and implement solutions
  • Assist with the release to production of new product designs 


  • Five or more years’ experience in process automation and mechanical and electromechanical product design in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with Solid Works solid modelling or other 3D CAD software (e.g., Inventor, Catia, etc.)
  • Experience in several of the below disciplines:
    • electrical/mechanical systems
    • motion control - linear, continuous, rotary, servo, stepping, etc.
    • sensors - ultrasonic, optics, acoustic, thermal, proximity, vibration, etc.
    • material properties, sheet metal work and welding
    • electronic bread boarding including soldering
    • basic circuit design
    • Must be able to demonstrate practical hands-on skills in mechanical/electrical fabrication and assembly
    • Experience with MS Office programs
    • Gerber experience is an asset
    • Electronic layout experience is an asset
    • Strong appreciation for QA and experience with ISO9001
    • Experience working within a well-structured document management system

  • Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Design, Mechanical Engineering, or Mechatronics Engineering or an equivalent combination of industry experience in related fields
