Description

This position is responsible for teaching environmental education
programs to schools, scout troops, birthday parties, summer camp, community
organizations, and the general public throughout the South Shore and Boston.
The naturalist will develop and facilitate a wide variety of engaging
nature-based STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs.

note: This is a seasonal PT Position

Requirements

CORE  EXPECTATIONS:

  PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT & DELIVERY

  • Assists with program development and delivery to meet the needs of the community and fulfill South Shore Natural Science Center objectives.
  • Teaches programs on a variety of topics school groups, scouts, families, summer campers, and adults.
  • Assists with development of curriculum, exhibits, media content, and demonstrations.
  • Assists with the care and maintenance of SSNSC’s living and non-living collections and uses collections in programming.

 VOLUNTEER ENGAGEMENT

  • Work collaboratively with staff to identify volunteer opportunities.
  • Engage volunteers and assist with volunteer training

 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations, responds to inquiries and solves problems.
  • Interprets interactive exhibits for members and non-members.

 COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT & SUPPORT

  • Assists in YMCA fund raising activities/events, and engages in collaborative relationships with community organizations in order to strengthen support and build community.
  • Assists with SSNSC special programs and events.

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor degree in environmental science, biology, natural history or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of teaching in a formal or informal science education setting      desired.
  • Experience  handling live animals for program use.
  • MA drivers’ license and confidence in driving a variety of YMCA vehicles.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal and customer service      skills.
  • Detail  oriented with the strong organizational and analytical skills required to      manage multiple projects and meet deadlines effectively.
  • Must  be available to work weekends.
  • Proficiency  with Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word and Excel and      experience working with databases.

  PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, or crouch.
